TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Hualien police will implement traffic control measures and install QR codes at key locations to manage heavy travel during the Lunar New Year holiday.
CNA reported Sunday that officers will be deployed to direct traffic on roads prone to congestion, including sections of the Suhua Highway corridor. QR codes placed at transport hubs and popular attractions will link to the traffic website, providing real-time information on public transport services and parking availability.
The Directorate General of Highways expects the heaviest southbound traffic into Hualien on the first day of the Lunar New Year, with peak northbound traffic on the fifth day. Daily traffic volumes are projected to reach about 16,000 vehicles entering and 21,000 leaving the county on those peak days, per UDN.
Police said congestion is most likely on road sections between Suao and Dongao, Dongao and Nanao, and from Heping to Chongde. Fixed checkpoints and mobile patrols will be used to keep traffic flowing and to respond quickly to traffic backups.
Authorities also warned of increased traffic around the Pacific Lantern Festival, a major evening lantern event in Hualien City running through March 8. Drivers are advised to park in nearby paid parking lots and walk to the venue to reduce congestion.
Police added that icy or snowy conditions could affect roads in the Hehuanshan area, with possible nighttime closures on Provincial Highway 14A if conditions worsen. Travelers were urged to check weather and road updates before departing and to plan safe return options after holiday gatherings.
