TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Lee Yi-yang (李逸洋), on Sunday praised Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae after her ruling coalition won a landslide victory in the lower house election, securing a projected two-thirds majority and full control of the government.
Lee said the results showed that Takaichi’s campaign platform strongly resonated with the Japanese public and succeeded in uniting voters. He expressed optimism that the outcome would lead to closer and more friendly Taiwan-Japan relations, per Mirror Media.
In a Facebook post, Lee noted that pre-election polls consistently showed voters were most concerned about improving the economy and curbing inflation. He said Takaichi’s passionate campaign speeches effectively mobilized the public, including younger voters who had previously shown little political engagement.
Takaichi has pledged to revise Japan’s National Security Strategy to strengthen the country’s military capabilities should it be drawn into conflict. Lee said her coalition’s overwhelming majority in the lower house would allow defense budget increases to advance more smoothly.
Lee added that the ruling coalition’s dominance means legislation can still be passed even if rejected by the upper house or not voted on within 60 days, further consolidating control of the government.
He said Takaichi’s strong public mandate would also bolster the Japan-US alliance, noting that she is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on March 19. Lee said Taiwan would continue to work alongside Japan and the US, as well as other like-minded partners, including Australia, the Philippines, and South Korea, to safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Lee also said the election result would help deepen Taiwan-Japan cooperation, particularly in economic and industrial sectors, creating mutually beneficial outcomes for both sides.
Following the release of official results Sunday evening, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) also congratulated Takaichi in a post on X, saying the landslide victory reflected the trust and expectations of Japanese voters.
Lai said he looked forward to working with Takaichi to address regional challenges together through shared values and mutually beneficial cooperation, promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
