TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A T’way Air flight from Jeju Island to Taiwan lost a tire while landing at Taoyuan Airport on Sunday afternoon, affecting around 14 flights.
Flight TW687 landed on the northern runway at 3:52 p.m. when the aircraft’s right main landing gear tire detached, per CNA. The plane safely taxied to stand A2, and no injuries were reported.
The north runway was immediately closed, with airport operations temporarily shifted to single-runway use. Inspections confirmed that the runway surface and navigational lighting were not damaged.
After marking and removing foreign object debris, including aircraft components, the north runway resumed operations at 5:35 p.m. The incident occurred during a peak arrival period, affecting eight arrivals and six departures, with most delays lasting about 20 minutes or less.
However, Japan Airlines Flight JL8671, which landed shortly after TW687, was delayed by about one hour while waiting on a taxiway for debris removal. During the north runway closure, air traffic control coordinated arrivals and departures to use the south runway.
Taoyuan International Airport Corp. said it has reported the incident to the Civil Aviation Administration, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board in accordance with relevant regulations. Airport authorities pledged to cooperate with the investigation to determine the cause and strengthen runway inspections and foreign object debris prevention measures.
