TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) is reportedly planning to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in mid-March.
CCP officials at the Work Conference on Taiwan Affairs in Beijing, which begins Monday, are set to finalize plans for the meeting between Cheng and Xi. Liberty Times, citing sources in China, reports the meeting will take place next month, around March 14, the commemoration date of China’s Anti-Secession Law.
After she was sworn in as KMT chair in late 2025, Cheng announced that she wanted an audience with Xi. In late January, Cheng said she hoped to visit China before she made a trip to Washington, since US officials would be interested in hearing about any discussions with the Chinese leader.
Last week, KMT Deputy Chair Hsiao Hsu-tsen (蕭旭岑) led a delegation of party members to Beijing to attend a think tank conference on cross-strait affairs. Speaking at the conference, Hsiao expressed support for Beijing’s “national rejuvenation” policy toward Taiwan.
Hsiao initially planned to meet with only lower-level officials from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, but the itinerary was unexpectedly changed on the final day of the conference to permit a meeting with Wang Huning. Wang, who is one of the CCP’s most senior officials, reportedly outlined preconditions for a meeting between Cheng and Xi.
Wang reportedly expressed concern about Taiwan’s continued arms purchases and said that a framework for cross-strait peace is only possible if the KMT takes concrete actions toward unification, reported LTN.
China reportedly wants the meeting to take place before US President Donald Trump’s anticipated visit to Beijing in April to dissuade the US from continuing to provide weapons to Taiwan. CCP leaders also hope the meeting will increase pro-KMT and anti-DPP sentiment among Taiwanese voters ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in November.
On the possibility of meeting with Xi, Cheng previously pledged that there would be no “secret talks” and all information from such a meeting would be made public.
