TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police arrested a 72-year-old man Sunday in connection with two suspected arson incidents at Taipei MRT stations.
Fires were reported in men’s restrooms at Daan Park Station and Shandao Temple Station on Sunday afternoon. Both were quickly extinguished by station staff, and no injuries were reported.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said MRT personnel immediately notified police and fire authorities after discovering the fires. The suspect was apprehended around 2:30 p.m. and taken in for questioning, per CNA.
Chiang said there was no need for public panic, adding that patrols at MRT stations have been increased to ensure passenger safety. Security has remained on heightened alert since a deadly stabbing incident on Dec. 19.
According to the Taipei City Fire Department, the first fire was reported at 11:53 a.m. in the B1-level men’s restroom at Daan Park Station. A second fire was reported at 1:59 p.m. at Shandao Temple Station, prompting the dispatch of eight fire trucks, one ambulance and 28 firefighters. The blaze had already been put out by station staff upon arrival, per UDN.
Police said debris was deliberately ignited in both restrooms. Based on similarities between the two incidents, investigators determined they were linked and identified a suspect through surveillance footage and clothing descriptions.
The suspect, a 72-year-old man surnamed Tseng (曾), was arrested near the intersection of Linsen South Road and Renai Road in Zhongzheng District. Police said he is believed to be from Fengyuan, Taichung.
During initial questioning, the suspect said he was dissatisfied with land rezoning disputes and had traveled north earlier in the day. Police said he allegedly carried straw with him and set fires in two MRT restrooms. Authorities have preliminarily ruled out accomplices.
The case will be referred to prosecutors on suspicion of arson and endangering public safety under the Criminal Code. Further investigation is ongoing.
