TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The DPP caucus at the Legislative Yuan submitted a formal request to Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) on Friday calling for the investigation and removal of TPP Legislator Lee Chen-hsiu (李貞秀).
Lee was sworn in as a legislator on Wednesday but has reportedly failed to renounce her Chinese nationality. DPP Caucus Secretary-General Chen Pei-yu (陳培瑜) told Han that by failing to renounce her foreign citizenship, Lee violates the Nationality Act which merits her prompt removal from office, reported UDN.
According to Article 20 of the Nationality Act, legislators may not hold dual citizenship and must submit a document certifying they have renounced foreign citizenship before they take office. Chen noted that previously, TPP Legislator Mai Yu-chen (麥玉珍) was able follow these procedures in accordance with the law and assumed office as a national legislator.
Lee and the TPP have been aware of the regulations for months but have failed to address this situation, Chen said. The letter from the DPP caucus follows multiple warnings from the Cabinet, and an announcement from the Ministry of Interior issued on Thursday that Lee will not be given access to any classified documents due to potential security risks associated with her Chinese nationality.
