TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) on Thursday promoted Dongshan wood-fired dried longan during a live television shopping channel broadcast, with more than 1,600 kg selling in about 30 minutes.
The city government said around 6,000 packs were prepared for the program, and all were sold shortly after they went on sale. It said the rapid sellout showed strong public trust in the quality of Tainan agricultural products.
“Dongshan wood-fired dried longan is one of Tainan’s most representative processed farm products and reflects generations of farmers’ craftsmanship,” Huang said. He said the fruit is harvested during the hottest season and slowly smoked in wood-fired kilns to produce a rich aroma and layered flavor.
CNA reported that Dongshan District has the highest concentration of traditional wood-fired kilns in Taiwan. The city government said farmers use locally grown longan fruit and longan wood as fuel, carefully controlling every step from harvesting to packaging to ensure consistent quality.
Dongshan’s climate helps produce longan with thick flesh, sweetness, and a strong fragrance sought after by consumers and food professionals, per Economic Daily News. The city said it will continue using diverse marketing channels and sales platforms to help farmers and promote Tainan agricultural products nationwide.
