TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Flower Market in Neihu District announced it will extend its opening hours beginning Thursday ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, according to an announcement.
The wholesale market will remain open daily until 3 p.m. during the first phase of the extended schedule. From Feb. 12 to 16, the market will operate continuously for 108 hours, staying open around the clock to meet holiday demand. The market has adopted a similar 24/7 schedule in previous years.
Hung Tzu-chieh (洪子傑), an official in the Taipei Flowers Auction’s planning division, said popular Lunar New Year varieties include lilies, pussy willow, and chrysanthemums. Supplies of these flowers are expected to increase by 10% to 20% this year, with prices about 10% lower overall, per CNA.
Hung said chrysanthemums are expected to sell for NT$200 (US$6.30) to NT$450 per bunch, while lilies are projected to range from NT$400 to NT$600 per bunch.
Based on past trends, peak demand for cut flowers, those without soil or pots, typically occurs in the five days leading up to the Lunar New Year, which falls between Feb. 12 and 16 this year. Estimated supply during that period is expected to reach about 960,000 to 1 million bunches, an increase of roughly 15% from last year.
Hung added that rose prices are expected to rise this year as Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14 coincides with the Lunar New Year holiday. Demand for potted plants such as orchids and kumquats typically peaks toward the end of the holiday period.
A wide variety of potted plants is currently available, and consumers are encouraged to purchase early.
The Taipei Flower Market will be decorated with special Lunar New Year decorations and traditional floral arrangements. Beginning Feb. 12, various lily varieties will be displayed at the south plaza of Hall A, allowing customers to compare colors and types before making purchases.
