TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Phones near Taipei MRT’s Daqiaotou Station are expected to receive a practice safety alert on Thursday afternoon for a live drill centered on a random attack.
The exercise will run from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and involve Daqiaotou Station and Sanchong Elementary School Station, with Taipei and New Taipei City governments working together. A cell broadcast message is slated for a 500-meter radius around Daqiaotou, per CNA.
Officials said the cell broadcast will be labeled as a drill in both Chinese and English. The message tells people nearby to stay calm, find cover close by and avoid crowding the area or stopping to watch.
The aim is for commuters to recognize the warning format and respond quickly in a real emergency, whether that means sheltering in place or following staff directions to leave the area, per the report. The same phone-alert method was used in earlier rounds at Taipei City Hall Station and Taipei Main Station.
The drill is the third round in a three-stage security program ordered by Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) after a Dec. 19 random stabbing incident that left three people dead as well as the attacker.
