TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Nanya Technology was fined NT$550,000 (US$17,400) after Labor Minister Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) found several violations of safety rules during an inspection tour of a construction project in New Taipei on Tuesday.
Ahead of the annual Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry of Labor visited factories and construction sites as businesses often rush work during the period, per CNA. Inspection teams fanned out over north, central, and south Taiwan to tour different sites on Tuesday.
Hung personally led a team to Nanya Technology’s 5A project in Taishan District. The NT$5.22 billion complex included an equipment factory, a nitrogen plant, and a water treatment installation.
The inspection found 14 safety violations, leading to orders to stop work at five locations inside the project. One of the main infractions was the absence of railings to protect workers from falling, the minister said.
Half of workplace accidents take place at construction sites and often involve falls from tall structures. A new Ministry of Labor action plan unveiled last month listed the construction industry as its main target and required more preventive measures from factory owners and subcontractors alike. Hung said the aim was not to collect more fines, but to improve the work safety culture.
