TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Family, friends, and figures from the entertainment industry gathered Monday to mark the first anniversary of the death of Taiwanese celebrity Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), known as Big S, with the unveiling of a memorial statue in New Taipei.
The private ceremony was held at Chin Pao San cemetery. Her sister, television host Dee Hsu (徐熙娣), stood tearfully before the statue, which was designed by Hsu’s South Korean husband, musician Koo Jun-yup, per CNA.
Hsu died of pneumonia at age 48 on Feb. 2 last year while traveling in Japan with her family. She contracted influenza during the Lunar New Year holiday, and her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her sudden death.
Since her passing, Koo has visited her gravesite almost daily, according to people close to the family. He personally oversaw the design and production of the memorial, which depicts a likeness of Hsu encircled by nine cube-like forms resembling planets, symbolizing, as he described, the enduring love surrounding her. The statue faces 208 degrees south, toward Taipei.

Koo said the sculpture represents an endless flow of love and serves as a place for fans and loved ones to remember the popular entertainer and television host.
Among those attending were Cho Si-won of South Korean boy band Super Junior, and former F4 members Jerry Yan (言承旭) and Vic Chou (周渝民). Also present were television producer Wang Wei-chung (王偉忠), hosts Kevin Tsai (蔡康永) and Matilda Tao (陶晶瑩), and singer Rainie Yang (楊丞琳).
Taipei 101 Chair Janet Chia (賈永婕) and her husband, film producer Chiu Li-kuan (邱瓈寬), were also seen paying their respects.
