TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) may visit the US in March.
In response to media reports about a possible trip, Lu said diplomacy is an important extension of municipal governance and a vital part of city administration, per CNA. The Taichung City Government will assess the needs of city diplomacy and make follow-up plans, she said, adding any confirmed information will be announced publicly later.
If a trip is confirmed, Lu would likely transit through New York and Washington, DC, and visit the American Institute in Taiwan headquarters, CNA said. She would also be expected to deliver speeches at major US think tanks or universities.
Lu praised Taiwan-US ties during a meeting with AIT Director Raymond Greene last Thursday. Taichung welcomes closer cooperation with the US in areas including industrial investment and technological innovation, she said.
Greene said Taichung is an important hub for artificial intelligence, automation, and drones. He said he hopes cooperation across a range of fields can be strengthened.
