TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pingtung County on Sunday opened Hengchun Fire Geological Park, a remodeled tourism site centered on a rare natural flame phenomenon caused by underground gas.
The county government said the park is located about one kilometer outside Hengchun Township and held its opening ceremony Sunday evening, offering free entry to ticket holders. Organizers said about 3,000 people attended.
CNA reported that the opening program featured dance performances inspired by nature, live music, and a traditional blessing ceremony praying for safety and continuity. The event marked a new phase of public access to the long-known natural fire site.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said residents have long been familiar with the flames, and the county hopes the fire will continue to burn sustainably. She said the area has been redesigned as an ecological park where visitors can walk during the day, stargaze at night, and view artworks at the visitor center, per Liberty Times.
The county’s Transportation and Tourism Development Office said the park highlights naturally emerging underground gas flames combined with surrounding water features. Officials said newly planned walking routes allow visitors to observe the landscape more closely and safely, per UDN.
The office said outdoor areas will open to the public for free starting Monday, while trial operations with ticketed entry are planned later this month. Residents of Hengchun, Mudan, Checheng, and Manzhou townships will be admitted free during the trial period.
