TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Coast Guard Administration rescued 600 people last year, including 100 foreigners, Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) said Wednesday.
In addition to helping out with disasters at sea, the Coast Guard also contributed to national security and law and order, she said. Patrols found 1.3 tonnes of illegal drugs last year, per CNA.
Kuan praised the Coast Guard for its role in facing high risk at sea while rescuing disaster victims and defending the nation against hostile threats and criminal enterprises. The minister emphasized the professionalism and the resilience of the service, which runs under the Ocean Affairs Council.
At the opening ceremony of a new Coast Guard building in Tainan, she added the government is considering wage hikes and reorganization measures to improve the working of the Coast Guard. Working conditions will be subject to gradual improvements in sync with concepts of sustainability, Kuan said.
