TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — In his first interview with Southeast Asian media since taking office, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Jan. 9 called for deeper semiconductor cooperation with Indonesia.
In a video interview with Majalah Tempo, Lin said the old formula of relying on China for economic growth and the United States for security protection no longer works. As a key player in the global semiconductor industry, Taiwan could serve as a bridge between Indonesia’s large market and supply chains linked to the US and other democratic economies, he said.
Lin said that as Taiwan continues to strengthen its international role, it can help Indonesia promote a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region. He also warned of the risks of overreliance on China’s commitments, saying Chinese-backed projects have often run into problems related to quality and financing, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
By contrast, Lin said Taiwan seeks to preserve the status quo and freedom of navigation, rather than raise tensions or create instability in the region. He expressed hope that Indonesia would base its relationship with Taiwan on practical cooperation and mutual benefit.
