TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taitung County Government has barred older gasoline scooters without valid emissions checks from entering Green Island after designating its first offshore air quality maintenance zone.
The county government said Monday the rule applies across Green Island Township and covers gasoline scooters more than five years old that have not passed their most recent emissions inspection. It said the measure aims to curb mobile pollution on the island.
The county government said riders who violate the rule face fines ranging from NT$500 (US$16) to NT$60,000, depending on the vehicle type, according to UDN. Authorities may issue repeated fines and order repairs if violations continue.
ETtoday reported that the air quality zone aims to protect residents and visitors by cutting exhaust emissions at the source and keeping the island’s air clean. Officials said the policy also seeks to boost local tourism by promoting low-carbon and sustainable travel.
The Environmental Protection Bureau said it has stepped up outreach since 2024 through briefings, posters, and warning signs to explain the rules. It urged riders to complete inspections and vehicle maintenance before traveling to Green Island to avoid fines and help improve air quality, per Cnews.
