TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Alex Honnold's ropeless push up Taipei 101 was grounded Saturday morning as drizzle swept Taiwan's capital, temporarily derailing the Netflix live program.
The 40-year-old "Free Solo" star — who first scouted the 508-meter tower in 2013 — nailed a roped test climb Wednesday through light rain that drew roadside crowds.
Taipei 101 Chair Chia Yung-chieh (賈永婕) announced the suspension of the climb on her Facebook page, commenting: “Heaven suggested we change it to 9 a.m. tomorrow. It will be worth the wait.”
Netflix confirmed the new scheduled time for the climb Sunday. It added, “Safety remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding.”
Honnold previously described the skyscraper's “bamboo box” ledges and balconies as “uniquely suited” for climbing. The three-decade climbing veteran said the ascent would be a test of stamina over extreme technique.
