TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The “Kingdom of Orchids” is hosting a floral spectacle in Tainan next month that blends biotech innovation and cultural heritage.
The event will run Feb. 27 to March 16 at the Orchid Biotechnology Park, a major hub of orchid cultivation in southern Taiwan, where vast greenhouses hum with AI-monitored orchid blooms, organizers said.
Organizers expect more than 100,000 visitors to the 16-day event. It will feature over 1,000 orchid varieties, immersive themed gardens mimicking local landscapes, and international competitions and forums on breeding, conservation, and drought-resistant hybrids.
A kickoff procurement meeting Feb. 25-28 will draw buyers from over 30 countries, building on last year's export haul topping NT$10 billion (US$310 million). Registration is already open via the website, according to the Taiwan Trade and Investment Service Center in Dallas.
Taiwan's orchid dominance traces to Japanese colonial-era breeders hybridizing wild species from northern Yangmingshan's misty slopes. Panorama previously reported that post-World War II government research propelled mass production of moth orchids in the 1980s via tissue culture and LED lighting, capturing 25% of the global Phalaenopsis market by the 2000s. Shipments now flood Europe and the US.
The show follows momentum from 2025's Asia-Pacific Orchid Conference and underscores sustainability amid climate challenges. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) opened last year's conference, signaling high-level backing.
Orchids hold deep cultural weight in Taiwan, symbolizing elegance and prosperity. They are often gifted at Lunar New Year, whose festivities this year align closely with the event's timing.
