TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene on Thursday said Northrop Grumman has established a medium-caliber ammunition test range in Taiwan as US-Taiwan cooperation expands in technology, drones, and AI.
Greene said the US is working with Taiwan’s industry to expand its domestic defense industrial base, per AIT. He said these collaborations not only enhance Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities but also expand manufacturing capacity and create jobs, and “pivot Taiwan to becoming a powerhouse in trusted global defense supply chains.”
Greene cited examples in unmanned systems, noting that Anduril has implemented a strategic supply chain program in Taiwan to source key components from multiple suppliers, enhancing global supply chain resilience for products like the Ghost-X unmanned aerial system. Shield AI has also invested heavily in Taiwan, procuring tens of millions of dollars’ worth of components and products while collaborating with Aerospace Industrial Development Corp., Taiwan’s largest aerospace manufacturer.
He said US-Taiwan defense armaments cooperation programs are expanding further. Northrop Grumman, he said, has set up a medium-caliber ammunition test range in Taiwan, allowing the Ministry of National Defense to test ammunition according to global standards. Through technology transfer, proprietary procedures, and expert training, the initiative advances domestic research and development projects.
Greene said the US considers Taiwan a key partner in advancing defense technology, built on the vitality of both countries’ commercial sectors. He said in artificial intelligence, the US leads in R&D, innovation, and applications, while Taiwan provides manufacturing and hardware expertise.
Together, he said, these capabilities could advance edge computing and embodied AI applications for drones, command and control, air defense, and other platforms that can “further revolutionize deterrence.” He said the goal of these initiatives is to create conditions for dialogue free from coercion.
