TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Lite-On Technology on Wednesday announced plans to acquire U-Media Communications, citing rapid growth in mobile network traffic driven by artificial intelligence applications.
Founded in 1975, Lite-On is one of Taiwan’s first publicly listed electronics companies and a pioneer in light-emitting diode (LED) technology, with expertise in optoelectronics and power management. U-Media is a Taiwanese manufacturer of wireless networking equipment, according to MoneyDJ.
Lite-On’s board approved a cash tender offer of NT$54 (US$1.70) per share for U-Media’s outstanding stock. The price is 19% higher than U-Media’s closing price of NT$45.35 on Wednesday, according to CNA.
Lite-On aims to acquire at least 20% and up to 100% of U-Media’s shares. If fully subscribed, the deal would cost roughly NT$2.03 billion.
The tender offer period will run from Friday until March 12. The acquisition will proceed only if Lite-On meets its minimum target of 20% ownership.
Lite-On General Manager Chiu Sen-bin (邱森彬) said expanding data centers and rising demand for edge computing and AI applications are driving strong growth in mobile network traffic. He said fixed wireless access and AI-optimized wireless networks are essential for providing fast, reliable connections while efficiently managing traffic.
Lite-On already offers networking products, and partnering with U-Media would strengthen its portfolio, Chiu added. The companies expect synergies to emerge within nine to 12 months.
Lite-On Chair Tom Soong (宋明峰) said the partnership would help the company integrate resources and product lines more effectively, positioning it to capture long-term opportunities tied to AI-driven network optimization and the growing adoption of edge computing.
U-Media Chair Mark Yuan (袁允中) said the partnership would accelerate product innovation and advance next-generation technologies. With AI evolving rapidly, he said, the alliance would help both companies build sustainable global competitiveness and expand opportunities in 5G and beyond.
