TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — SpaceX reportedly visited Taiwan recently to expand orders with key local suppliers as it ramps up low-Earth-orbit satellite upgrades.
The Taiwanese suppliers visited remained discreet, but officials confirmed the SpaceX team coordinated with government agencies and said the trip’s main purpose was supply chain engagement, per UDN. Analysts expect Universal Microwave Technology and Compeq to see increased orders, while other supporting suppliers such as Innolux, Parpro, TSEC, and Taiwan Cement could also benefit.
Sources said the visit focused on UMT and Compeq because both hold irreplaceable positions in the industry. UMT is considered “Taiwan’s purest SpaceX supplier” and has collaborated with the company for many years.
UMT initially provided key components for SpaceX ground stations and has since expanded into satellite communications payloads, satellite control, satellite connectivity, and direct-to-phone satellite services. The partnership is considered strong and stable.
Compeq mainly supplies printed circuit boards, often called the “mother of electronic components.” The quality of PCB materials is crucial due to the harsh space environment.
As a global leader in high-density interconnect boards and a major manufacturer of PCBs for low-Earth-orbit satellites, Compeq’s satellite boards have become SpaceX’s top choice. With few suppliers worldwide and extremely high technological barriers in the low-Earth-orbit satellite industry, Compeq is highly valued by the company.
In addition, Molicel high-end lithium batteries produced by Taiwan Cement’s subsidiary Molie Quantum Energy are supplied not only to electric supercars such as the McMurtry Speirling and electric aircraft, but also to SpaceX for its space missions.
Sources said SpaceX currently operates around 7,500 satellites in orbit with over 9 million global users, surpassing the combined satellite count and user base of its competitors. Musk, however, is not satisfied with the status quo and continues to demand upgrades to SpaceX’s satellites.
