TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police in Tainan sealed off roads Wednesday morning after a sinkhole re-opened for the third time in two years at the intersection of Wufei Street and Ximen Road.
CNA reported Wednesday that a large sinkhole opened Tuesday afternoon, prompting the city’s Public Works Bureau to move in overnight to backfill the hole and inject grout. The road, however, collapsed again Wednesday morning, leaving a gravel truck stuck in the damaged roadway.
The bureau said Tuesday’s collapse occurred in front of No. 338, Wufei Street, where a sinkhole about 2 meters long, 1 meter wide, and nearly 2 meters deep formed, per ETtoday. It said a leaking water pipe beneath the road could continue to erode the ground.
The first collapse occurred on March 6, 2024, when a large sinkhole formed during construction and swallowed a truck, per Liberty Times. TVBS reported that the road collapsed again Tuesday but was quickly fixed, before giving way once more on Wednesday morning, marking the third collapse.
City Councilor Chen I-chen (陳怡珍) said authorities have moved in to carry out grouting and safety work. She urged a comprehensive inspection of underground pipelines and closer follow-up monitoring to prevent further collapses.
