TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung will implement an NT$30 (US$0.95) surcharge per trip during the Lunar New Year holiday.
The New Taipei City Transportation Department on Monday said the surcharge will be in effect from 12 a.m. on Feb. 11 through 12 p.m. on Feb. 22, per CNA. The standard nighttime surcharge of NT$20 will remain from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and national freeway tolls must also be included in the metered fare.
The nighttime surcharge is automatically added by the meter based on the time. The Lunar New Year surcharge and freeway tolls are manually set by drivers, with the meter displaying “Lunar New Year” to indicate the extra charge.
Passengers are advised to request a receipt before exiting the vehicle and verify the fare on the spot. Overcharging complaints can be filed by noting the vehicle number, time, and location and calling the 1999 citizen hotline or submitting a report via the New Taipei mayor’s mailbox.
The department said joint inspections with the police will be conducted on a rolling basis and intensified ahead of and during the Lunar New Year holiday. Taxi drivers are urged to comply with regulations.
Verified infringements, such as improper metering or operating without a valid license, will be fined NT$9,000 to NT$90,000 under the Highway Act.
