TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei will allow large motorcycles, defined as bikes with engines over 250cc, to park in paid roadside scooter spaces in phases by July 2026 after pilot programs improved parking availability.
The city government said Thursday that trials in Banqiao and Xindian Districts, which began in August 2025, helped ease parking demand for cars, scooters, and large motorcycles while maintaining order. Based on those results, officials approved a second-stage plan to expand the policy citywide.
Under the new rules, large motorcycles may park diagonally across one or two paid scooter spaces, depending on vehicle size. The city’s transport department said fees will match large-motorcycle parking rates at NT$30 (US$0.95) for every four hours.
The rollout will begin in March in Xinzhuang, Sanchong, Luzhou, Linkou, and Taishan Districts. It will expand in May to Zhonghe, Yonghe, Tucheng, and Tamsui Districts, before reaching the remaining areas such as Yingge, Sanxia, and Xizhi by July.
CNA and Liberty Times reported that large motorcycles will remain banned from free scooter spaces to prevent crowding out regular riders. Police may fine violators between NT$600 and NT$1,200 under traffic regulations regarding parking length, location, or vehicle type.
New Taipei had more than 50,000 registered large motorcycles as of November. Current rules already allow large motorcycles to park in car spaces, roadside car spaces, and designated large-motorcycle slots.
