TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two Canadian lawmakers cut short their visit to Taiwan ahead of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trip to China on Tuesday.
Parliamentarians Helena Jaczek and Marie-France Lalonde are returning to Canada, per Reuters. “As this portion of the visit concludes, informed by advice from the government, we are returning home,” according to a statement. “It’s important that we avoid confusion with Canada’s foreign policy, given the overlap with the Prime Minister’s engagement in Beijing, which was only confirmed last week.”
The lawmakers reaffirmed that Canada’s position on Taiwan remains the same. Three other lawmakers are still in Taiwan and will meet President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday, Reuters said.
In response to the shortened trip, MOFA Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei said, “The foreign ministry continues to welcome friends from all walks of life to visit Taiwan and we will continue working with Canada to further deepen exchanges and cooperation across all fields.”
Carney will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and other officials to discuss trade, energy, agriculture, and international security, according to an office press release. “We’re forging new partnerships around the world to transform our economy from one that has been reliant on a single trade partner, to one that is stronger and more resilient to global shocks,” he said.
