TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will participate in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings hosted by China this year, Sun Chien-yuan (孫儉元), director-general of the foreign ministry’s Department of International Organizations, said Tuesday.
Taiwan, as a full member of APEC, has always actively participated in related meetings, Sun said at a press conference, per CNA. That will not change even though China is hosting this year, he said.
The APEC Informal Senior Officials' Meeting will be held in Shenzhen, China, from Feb. 1-10 under the theme "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together."
Sun said China, as host, should follow the established practices and conventions observed when other members host meetings. It should also treat Taiwan on an equal basis and ensure the safety of Taiwanese government personnel, he added.
Over the past year, Taiwan has held multiple rounds of consultations with China on entry arrangements and has a working model in place, though Sun did not disclose details. He said Taiwan participated in an informal APEC senior officials meeting in Shenzhen in December without any issues or harassment.
