TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Thailand has extradited a Taiwanese man charged with importing cannabis from Canada five years ago, reports said Friday.
Chen (陳) ordered 110 bags of the cannabis buds weighing 54 kilograms, according to the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau. The class-two drugs were hidden inside maple boards on a ship, per CNA.
Prosecutors in Keelung charged Chen in 2022, but as the court was handling the case in August 2023, he left the country. As the authorities could not find him, prosecutors listed him as a fugitive and started efforts to locate him overseas.
Chen turned up in Thailand in November when he presented himself at immigration to extend his stay. He was moved to a detention facility in Bangkok to await extradition.
The Investigation Bureau negotiated with Thailand to have him returned, but Chen refused to cooperate and tried to delay the procedure. On Friday, Thailand put Chen on a flight to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, where the Keelung District Prosecutors Office will take over the case.
