TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area saw its first snowfall in eight years Thursday morning, prompting residents to rush to capture the brief event on video and social media.
The Central Weather Administration said that temperatures at the Alishan weather station dropped to around 1 C at 7 a.m., with snow briefly falling around 9 a.m., per CNA. According to bureau records, the last time it snowed on Alishan was in 2018.
Chen Chih-yin (陳志銀), an official from the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, told CNA that snow fell at the Zhushan Station on the Alishan Forest Railway for about 20 minutes.
Snow could fall again on Alishan over the next few days. The Chiayi County Government reminded tourists that if they drive up the mountain at night to view snow, they should follow traffic rules, avoid reckless overtaking, and drive safely.
