TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – As Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. acquires more land in Phoenix to expand its fabs, the city’s vice mayor is preparing to sign a semiconductor agreement in Taiwan, reports said Wednesday.
Ann O’Brien said she would travel to Taiwan to conclude a memorandum of understanding with the Industrial Technology Research Institute and other bodies to promote innovation and collaboration in fields including AI and semiconductors, per CNA. The agreement would result in a strategic alliance between two global technology hubs, she said.
O’Brien led the Phoenix delegation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where she presented her city to more than 20 innovators from Taiwan. She emphasized the relationship worked both ways, providing opportunities to investors and technology companies from Taiwan to operate in Phoenix and the other way around.
TSMC is expected to acquire 900 acres (364 hectares) in a public auction Wednesday, after the city adjusted plans in order to meet concerns from residents about the environment and the traffic situation. The land is part of a 7,400-acre plot the Phoenix city council approved for the world’s largest contract chipmaker.
