TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Wednesday that his planned 10 AI infrastructure projects have been set in motion.
The plan focuses on three key technologies: silicon photonics, quantum computing, and AI robotics. Speaking at the Cabinet Science and Technology Advisory Conference, Lai said the Cabinet is already investing in R&D for these three technologies, per the Presidential Office.
In November, over NT$30 billion was allocated for the initiative in the proposed 2026 budget.
These efforts will secure Taiwan’s competitive edge and serve as a strategic shield to protect the nation, the president said. According to industry statistics, Taiwan holds a critical position in the global AI server supply chain and has a complete IC and AI ecosystem, he said.
Lai pointed out that the National Center for High-Performance Computing has begun operations at the Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan. Moving forward, the government will increase investment in talent cultivation and integrate cross-disciplinary R&D capabilities.
Over the next decade, Taiwan should set the specifications and norms in tech-related industries, Lai said. He emphasized that technological development is a race against time.
Lai said he believed Taiwan would become a key global hub for knowledge and innovation and a trusted, resilient leader in the AI era.
