TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s consumer price index fell below 2% to 1.66% in 2025 for the first time in four years, reports said Wednesday.
Despite the overall fall of inflation for the year, in December, the rate rose slightly to 1.31%, per CNA. Core inflation, leaving the prices of fruit, vegetables, and energy products out of consideration, amounted to 1.83% for the last month of 2025.
The cost of a basket of 17 household necessities monitored by the government rose an average of 2.57% in December, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics. The basket included eggs, sugar, rice, bread, pork, cooking oil, instant noodles, shampoo, and toilet paper.
Items becoming more expensive in December were jewelry due to rising gold prices, housing because of rising rents, pork, and grain products including rice and bread, UDN reported. In contrast, vegetable prices fell 18.20% compared to December 2024, when the results of typhoons caused higher prices.
