TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday condemned a joint statement issued by Pakistan Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that affirms the “one China” principle.
The two officials signed a communique claiming that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” during the seventh China–Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue in Beijing last week, according to a ministry press release.
The foreign ministry condemned Beijing for continuing to spread disinformation that undermines Taiwan’s sovereignty. The ministry reiterated that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, and the Chinese Communist Party has never ruled Taiwan.
The ministry called on Pakistan to refrain from disregarding facts or supporting rhetoric that undermines regional peace and stability.
Taiwan’s sovereignty belongs to the Taiwanese, and only the Taiwanese have the right to decide the country’s future, the ministry added. It pledged to defend the values of freedom and democracy and cooperate with partners to uphold peace and stability in the region.
