TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Legislator Chen Yu-jen (陳玉珍) has been accused of lobbying Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) on behalf of its employees to secure promotions, allegations that could violate the Anti-Corruption Act.
Former SETN reporter and DPP Taipei City Council candidate Ma Yu-wen (馬郁雯) on Monday released what she described as evidence of corruption involving Chen, per NOWNews. The materials included text messages and Line conversations that Ma said showed Chen intervening in CHT’s internal personnel matters, including efforts to secure a promotion for an employee surnamed Chen (陳).
Ma previously disclosed a document she said originated from the Chunghwa Telecom Workers’ Union’s Kaohsiung branch, per UDN. The document, addressed to the Presidential Office, alleged that Chen pressured CHT to promote an employee surnamed Li (李) and noted that Chen had received a political donation of NT$5,000 (US$158.70) from Li in 2023.
Chunghwa Telecom Workers’ Union President Teng Ke-lien (鄧克廉) commented on the allegations, saying Chen has repeatedly interfered in the company’s affairs, per Newtalk. He said he possesses evidence of Chen’s alleged misconduct and claimed she also attempted to influence a union election.
Ma said Chen’s actions may violate Article 6 of the Anti-Corruption Act and added that she has additional information that could be provided if an investigation is launched.
Chen denied the allegations, accusing the Chunghwa Telecom union in Kinmen of suppressing employees who oppose the union’s leadership, per CMedia. She said her actions constituted lawful petitioning on behalf of the public and urged critics to report her to the relevant authorities if they believe she acted unlawfully.
Chen also challenged Ma to present her findings to prosecutors, noting that Ma has previously claimed to have well-established sources within prosecutorial offices.
