TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Ambassador Jeremy Liang (梁洪昇) headed a 29-member Taiwan Regiment to take part in a traditional royal ceremony in diplomatic ally Eswatini, reports said Tuesday.
Staff at Taiwan’s embassy and members of its development aid and medical teams in the country formed the regiment, per CNA. The Incwala ceremony attracted 80,000 participants, but the Taiwanese formed part of a small group of foreigners at the event.
Wearing traditional Eswatini dress, the Taiwan Regiment marched over 30 kilometers during 12 hours from the afternoon of Jan. 3 to 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 4. Receiving an invitation to the event was a significant gesture for any foreign citizens, the embassy said. The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Eswatini, George Wachira of Kenya, was also invited.
At the opening ceremony, Liang and the Taiwan Regiment took part in the performance of traditional songs and dances in the presence of King Mswati III. During a pause on the road, the king greeted Liang and expressed his appreciation for the size of the Taiwan Regiment, according to the embassy.
