TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s 7,200 7-Eleven convenience stores will start providing travel information to overseas visitors next month, reports said Tuesday.
Starting on Feb. 6, travelers can obtain information about restaurants, hotels, shopping, and travel in the country by scanning a QR code at a convenience store, per CNA. The Tourism Administration signed a memorandum of understanding with President Chain Store Corporation on Tuesday for a gradual launch.
North and east Taiwan and Kinmen will start first, but all 7-Eleven outlets will participate by the end of July. Any ibon self-service kiosk showing the OhBear QR code will connect to a travel service progressive web app to provide the most precise information, the administration said.
The system covers data from a range of public services, including the Tourism Administration, national parks, forestry conservation departments, and local governments. Convenience stores will also play a part in a future version of the “Taiwan the Lucky Land” program, where overseas visitors can win prizes, the administration said. The new version includes NT$5,000 (US$158) for return visitors if they bring along a new visitor, but all the details have not been worked out yet.
