TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A strong continental cold air mass moving across Taiwan prompted cold surge advisories for 12 areas on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
CNA reported that the CWA said temperatures will fall from morning through night as cold air moves south. Officials warned that parts of northern, central, and southern Taiwan could experience lows below 10 C, with conditions turning colder after sunset.
Areas under the advisory include Greater Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Taichung, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Yilan. The advisory mainly covers early morning and nighttime hours.
The CWA noted that the lowest temperatures recorded early Monday were 8 C in Tainan’s Nansi District and 9.1 C in Kaohsiung’s Shanlin District. Officials said more areas could see similar or lower readings in the coming days.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said it will turn colder later in the day as skies clear and cold air strengthens. He said morning temperatures from Tuesday through Friday could drop below 5 C in some low-lying areas, marking the coldest spell so far this winter.
Wu said sunny daytime weather may ease the chill, but temperatures will fall quickly after dark. He added that cold conditions should slowly ease after Friday, though mornings and nights will remain chilly with large day-night temperature swings.
