TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense on Monday said it is prepared for all contingencies after questions were raised over whether China could emulate a Venezuela-style assault.
US President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered a surprise operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. Before a meeting at the legislature, reporters asked Vice Defense Minister Hsu Szu-chien (徐斯儉) whether China might launch a similar “decapitation strike” against Taiwan’s leadership, per Liberty Times.
Hsu said the armed forces’ emergency response framework covers a wide range of hypothetical scenarios and that the military regularly coordinates with other relevant agencies. He said the military conducts exercises and has emergency response protocols, such as the “Wan Chun Plan,” which could be used to evacuate the president to a secure location.
Hsu added that the main focus of the meeting’s agenda that day was the budget. He said the annual budget includes many items related to asymmetric deterrence, deterring enemy forces, protecting soldiers’ personal equipment, and caring for service members.
He expressed hope that both the annual and special budgets would be scheduled for committee review by the Legislative Yuan, saying, “As I have said before, we are willing to compile the budgets prudently under the oversight of the legislature.”
Asked whether Chinese aircraft and vessels operated near Taiwan on Sunday after the US military action in Venezuela, Hsu said the military conducts routine intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance every day and releases the information at set times. He said three Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels, and one Chinese official ship were tracked around Taiwan.
