TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People’s Party Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said in an interview Monday that at-large Legislator Chen Chao-tzu (陳昭姿) may be an exception to the party’s two-year term limit for at-large lawmakers.
Huang said he has already signed his resignation letter and that the party aims to keep the transition period as short as possible, per Tai Sounds. Asked whether Chen would be exempt from the term limit, Huang said the matter is for Chen and former Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) to address.
Chen said at a news conference Friday that the TPP had proposed amendments to ease legal restrictions on surrogacy but faced opposition from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, per UDN. Asked whether Chen would be exempt from the two-year term limit, Ko said internal matters would be handled within the party and expressed dissatisfaction with the obstacles facing the TPP’s proposed amendments.
Huang also said Ko had expressed a desire for him to remain in the legislature. Huang said he nonetheless intends to follow through with the rotation to demonstrate that the TPP adheres to its rules. He added that as party chair and caucus whip, he will continue to attend the caucus’ Tuesday and Friday morning meetings.
Ko, speaking while touring a market with Legislator Chang Chi-kai (張啓楷), said the party would uphold its two-year term limit rule but noted that many factors must be taken into consideration, per CNA. Ko also appeared alongside National Chung Cheng University professor Wang An-hsiang (王安祥), who is set to become an at-large legislator after the incumbents’ terms expire.
