TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) unveiled the new Vessel Traffic Service Center in Taichung Port on Saturday, designed to enhance the safety of offshore wind farms.
At the launch ceremony, Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) praised Taiwan’s achievement of starting from nothing to become one of the five top countries for wind energy. He added that the new center would respond to the maritime safety needs of the sector, per CNA.
The complex can monitor ship movements over a 4,000-square-kilometer area. Direct wireless and Automatic Identification System communication with ships is also possible, with AI facilitating the automatic reporting of anomalies in vessel routes.
The service center will also function as a bridge between commercial ships and fishing trawlers. Special design features guarantee against power outages and internet failures, while the installation of four new radars will be completed by the end of 2027.
While most offshore wind parks are now located in Changhua and Taichung, the new center would allow monitoring to expand north to New Taipei, improving maritime safety over a larger area, Chen said.
