TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Protection measures for DPP Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) will be stepped up after personal data was published in the Chinese media, the National Police Agency said Saturday.
Shen has been the target of criticism from China for some time due to his high profile at the Legislative Yuan. Beijing labeled him a “hardline Taiwan independence supporter” and threatened to have him arrested overseas and extradited.
On Jan. 1, state-owned media in China published pictures of Shen as well as satellite photos showing the locations of his office and home while requesting additional information from the public, per CNA.
Police said they were taking appropriate measures to protect Shen’s safety, ensuring he could perform his duties as a lawmaker. The authorities would adjust the measures based on a safety evaluation and protect his personal safety as well as his home.
Police cautioned members of the public in Taiwan not to assist in efforts by enemy forces. People agreeing to acts of surveillance or other actions threatening Shen would face legal action, police said.
Shen said China was trying to divide Taiwanese society, but as people would understand Beijing’s intentions better and better, its threats would gradually lose impact, the Liberty Times reported. He added that Chinese media did not know it is even easier to find similar data using Google Earth, which is unavailable in China.
