TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China’s claim that dozens of countries support its military exercises around Taiwan is false and dangerous, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
Beijing said on Wednesday that the PLA’s exercises around Taiwan adhere to the so-called “one-China principle” and have won backing from dozens of countries, per CNA. It also criticized concern from foreign governments and international bodies.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) rejected the claim, saying it distorts reality and violates internationally recognized facts. It also violates the UN Charter’s prohibition on the threat or use of force.
Hsiao reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign country not subordinate to China, stressing that only Taiwan’s people have the right to decide their future.
Hsiao thanked Taiwan’s diplomatic allies and likeminded partners, including Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, for opposing unilateral changes to the status quo by force. He called for international support for peace in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific.
