TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Cabinet has filed a request with the Constitutional Court to rule on opposition-backed pension changes, reports said Wednesday.
The Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party used their majority at the Legislative Yuan on Dec. 12 to pass amendments to the Civil Servants Retirement, Discharge, and Pensions Act and to revise Articles 37, 38, and 67 of the Public School Employee Retirement, Discharge, and Pensions Act. The government said the measures reverse seven years of pension reform and threaten the sustainability of the pension system.
The Cabinet decided on Dec. 16 to countersign the legislation but also petition the Constitutional Court for a ruling. Cabinet Spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) said the passage of the bills involved major procedural flaws, the Liberty Times reported.
Lee said the revisions would create generational injustice, with future generations facing a bankrupt pension system and having to cover its losses. She added that seven years of reform achievements would be discarded.
Lee said the government would handle the issue with respect for the law and the Constitution while awaiting the court’s decision.
