TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Police Department is deploying more than 2,000 officers for New Year’s Eve security.
The department said 2,156 officers have been assigned to provide security for the city’s New Year’s Eve party at Taipei City Hall Plaza, CNA reported. This includes 1,570 from the Taipei City Police Department and 586 personnel from the National Police Agency, along with 858 civilian volunteers.
The venue was cleared at 10 a.m. Wednesday and opened at 1 p.m. To maintain safety, police at two key intersections are using metal detectors for screening, Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism Commissioner Yu Hsiang (余祥) said.
In addition, Taipei Metro will operate continuously from 6 a.m. Wednesday through midnight Thursday without end-of-service breaks, excluding the Xiaobitan and Xinbeitou branch lines. Taipei Metro said nearly 2,900 personnel have been mobilized across the system to guide passengers and maintain safety.
The Taipei City Government will also impose two-stage controls on YouBike stations near the event area. Starting at 5 p.m., 40 stations around MRT Xiangshan Station and the Taipei 101 area will be temporarily suspended. At 7 p.m., YouBikes at 25 more stations, including those near Sanxing Park and Xiangshan Park, will be suspended. Service will resume at 3 a.m. Thursday.
