TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung will start trial operations of its second zoo in Neimen District on Jan. 17, featuring over 20 animal species.
CNA reported Tuesday that Neimen Zoo covers about 11.5 hectares and aims to mix animal interaction, conservation, and local culture. The city's tourism bureau Director Kao Min-ling (高閔琳) said it was built with city funding before being run by a professional team.
Officials said animal species include sloths, foxes, anteaters, capybaras, and meerkats. Visitors can sign up for guided activities to get close to animals and pick up simple conservation ideas.
The Liberty Times reported that the construction was budgeted at NT$564 million (US$18 million) and uses a low-impact, animal-friendly design. Buildings and landscaping take cues from Neimen District’s “Song Jiang Battle” formations and nearby Zizhu Temple to link the zoo with local traditions.
“Song Jiang Battle” is a traditional folk performance from southern Taiwan that mixes martial arts moves, drums, and group formations. It comes from temple culture and is often shown at religious events to honor heroes and demonstrate teamwork and discipline.
The tourism bureau said all visits must be booked online to control crowd sizes and protect animal welfare during the trial run. Tickets cost NT$399 for adults, NT$299 for Kaohsiung residents, and NT$149 for concession tickets, while Neimen residents and children under 2 enter free.
Neimen Zoo is also referred to as Yessen Animal School and Neimen Tourism and Recreation Park.
