TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei MRT will operate nonstop for 42 hours over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to accommodate crowds attending celebrations around Taipei City Hall Plaza, including the Taipei 101 fireworks.
Continuous service will run from 6 a.m. on Dec. 31 through midnight on Jan. 1, allowing revelers to travel home after the countdown and related events, Taipei MRT said in a press release.
A “2 Lines In, 3 Lines Out” traffic plan is being promoted for those planning to travel to the area. The two inbound lines are the Bannan Line and the Tamsui–Xinyi Line, which will operate at peak frequency starting at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. For departures after the event, passengers are advised to use those two lines as well as the Songshan–Xindian Line.
Based on experience, Taipei MRT said queues for the Bannan and Tamsui–Xinyi lines can be lengthy after the fireworks end. As an alternative, passengers may walk about 20 minutes from Taipei City Hall Station or Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station to Nanjing Sanmin Station or Taipei Arena Station, or take a shuttle bus along Guangfu South Road to connect with the Songshan–Xindian Line.
Special crowd control measures will be implemented at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station. Concertgoers will be directed to enter through Exit 5, while New Year’s Eve party attendees will be guided to exit via Exits 2, 3 and 4. Passengers are urged to follow on-site staff instructions to ensure safety.
To ease post-event congestion following the Taipei Dome concert and the countdown, Taipei MRT said rides will be free from 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 for passengers entering from Nanjing Sanmin Station or Taipei Arena Station, regardless of travel distance.
Passengers are advised to top up electronic tickets or purchase single-journey tickets in advance to speed entry and exit. The Maokong Gondola will also extend service until 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, or until crowds have fully dispersed.
Taipei MRT encouraged passengers to use the Go! Taipei Metro app to plan trips and check real-time crowd and route information.
