TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two Taiwanese passengers aboard an EVA Air flight were flagged at Kansai International Airport in Osaka for carrying prohibited items on Dec. 25.
EVA Air Flight BR31 from New York to Taoyuan was diverted to Osaka due to severe weather, UDN reported. During security checks, two Taiwanese passengers were found with prohibited items, described in reports as either firearms or ammunition.
Japanese law enforcement officers were called to handle the case, but reports did not indicate any arrests. A social media influencer with knowledge of the aviation industry initially reported that the passengers were carrying firearms, but this may have been inaccurate, per SETN.
Subsequent reports said the passengers were carrying firearm ammunition rather than guns, LTN reported. EVA Air said the prohibited items were surrendered to Japanese authorities and that Flight BR31 arrived safely in Taiwan on the morning of Dec. 26.
Taiwan’s National Police Agency is reportedly involved and has been in contact with law enforcement offices in Osaka. As of Sunday, Japanese authorities had not issued a public police report on the incident, per Mirror Media.
The identities of the passengers and circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be clarified by relevant authorities.
