TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The average daily number of passengers for Taiwan Railway Corporation rose 1.4% despite the first train fare hikes in 30 years in June, reports said Saturday.
On June 23, an average increase of 26.8% went into effect, with other services including parcel delivery also becoming more expensive. Nevertheless, during the period from the fare hike to Dec. 19, the average daily number of passengers recorded an increase of about 10,000 to 652,000 from the same period last year, per CNA.
Income from ticketing over the same period for 2025 reached NT$64.44 million (US$2.05 million), an increase of NT$14.10 million or 28% over the same period in 2024.
The company estimated total income from fares for 2025 would rise NT$2.6 billion, with an average of 670,000 passengers per day, or 2.9% more than in 2024.
Revenue from rail tourism increased 15.12% to NT$100 million for the January-November period this year, per UDN. The total for the year is expected to reach NT$120 million.
Taiwan Rail also reported an improved safety record, with lower figures for all types of accidents and technical problems.
