TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three KMT lawmakers have been criticized for visiting China this weekend ahead of an important legislative session.
Weng Hsiao-ling (翁曉玲), Lin Szu-ming (林思銘), and Yeh Yuan-chih (葉元之) reportedly left Taiwan for China to attend an event held by the Xiamen Taiwan Businessmen Association. The reports have sparked accusations they may meet with Chinese government officials to consult on Taiwan’s domestic legislative matters, reported LTN.
Both Weng and Yeh were seen on Xiamen Airlines flight MF888 on Saturday. While Weng acknowledged she was attending the business event, it was unclear whether Yeh joined it.
The lawmakers’ visit to Xiamen was criticized by DPP Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤). She suggested they may be engaging with Chinese Communist Party officials to receive instructions on legislative matters or laying the groundwork for a summit between KMT chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, per LTN.
In the coming weeks, the Legislative Yuan is set to vote on key matters, including the Lai administration’s special defense budget and several acts related to national security. Weng, as convener of the Legislative Yuan’s Procedure Committee, has the power to schedule votes on defense procurement or delay them by sending them to committees for review.
Weng said her visit to China was a personal one and that she had no plans to meet with any Chinese officials. While at the Xiamen Taiwan Businessmen Association’s meeting, she was photographed with the father of Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), per LTN.
