TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Uni-President Enterprises is planning to remove the name Carrefour from the chain’s supermarkets next year, reports said Friday.
The company's board approved a name change, but a new name still has to be chosen, the Liberty Times reported. Uni-President completed a 100% takeover of Carrefour stores in July 2023, but kept the name on storefronts.
The company said the selection process for a new name should bear fruit by the middle of 2026. The group has responded to years of changes in Taiwan’s retail market, while the management philosophies and styles of France’s Carrefour and Uni-President differ.
New management responded to changing trends in the Taiwan market and to the group’s long-term development plans, according to Uni-President. The end of the branding agreement with France’s Carrefour allows Taiwanese management teams to make decisions based on local consumer demand, using Uni-President’s online and offline resources to offer domestic and foreign brand products.
The group also runs 7-Eleven, Starbucks, and Cosmed in Taiwan. After taking over Jasons Market Place in 2016, it changed the name of the food retailer to Mia C’bon.
