TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Trump administration's record NT$350.3 billion (US$11.11 billion) arms sale to Taiwan includes 420 M57 ATACMS missiles, some of which are the newest variants with an estimated maximum range of nearly 500 km.
Taiwan’s long-range missile procurement program previously acquired 29 HIMARS systems, 84 ATACMS missiles, and 864 precision-guided rockets at a total cost of over NT$32.5 billion. The latest announcement covers the program’s second phase, including 82 additional M142 HIMARS systems, 420 M57 ATACMS missiles, and more than 1,200 precision-guided rockets.
The sale also includes 45 sets of the International Field Artillery Tactical Data System, which automates artillery fire direction, bringing the total value of the second-phase sale to roughly NT$127.5 billion (US$4 billion).
A senior official familiar with Taiwan‑US military cooperation told Liberty Times that the first phase of the program featured M57 ATACMS missiles with a 300 km range. However, some of the 420 M57 missiles in this second phase will be the newest variant, capable of longer-range strikes.
The official did not disclose how many of the latest versions but estimated their maximum range approaches 500 km. The source added that these variants would enhance Taiwan’s ability to strike coastal PLA positions.
The Ministry of National Defense said that five of the eight approved items, the M109A7 howitzers, follow-on purchases of the HIMARS system, TOW missiles, anti-armor loitering munitions, and Javelin missiles, are part of a special budget to strengthen defense resilience and asymmetric warfare capabilities. After the Legislative Yuan approves the special budget, the defense ministry will proceed in accordance with regulations to sign the letters of offer and acceptance for the arms procurement cases.
